MANAGEMENT AND CLINICAL LEADERSHIP
I have a deep interest in medical management and the pursuit of clinical excellence by individuals and institutions. Soon after my appointment as consultant I completed a course for Senior Clinical Leaders, designed to support the development of leadership skills among clinicians in Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trust. As ‘first among equals’ among 12 gynaecologists, I led the division in delivering operational targets, efficiencies and service reconfiguration. I had overall responsibility for ensuring evidence-based guidelines and protocols and effective clinical audit. I supported the introduction of a robust, open clinical governance culture which has developed and matured over the years into an excellent resource for improving patient safety and quality of care. I carried out appraisal and job planning for consultant colleagues.
